Bush upheld on child insurance veto
House backers of a $35 billion spending increase for the State Children's Health Insurance Program fell 13 votes short of overriding President Bush's veto of the bill yesterday. The vote was 273 to 156 and fell sharply along partisan lines. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said Democrats will begin negotiating immediately with the White House on a compromise to renew and expand the State
